Matteo Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at Lazio's home ground was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had allowed a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or was there ever a thread maintaining its structure from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, before he admitted that the board had not mentioned the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Reports that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic in their performances as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it has been hard to determine if they're getting better or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Comeback

One individual remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this season. He completed last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were attempting to extend his stay a while longer. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

He signed initially when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Discovering His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to identify the nature of the player's talent. Billed as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
