Intense gales reaching speeds of up to 155km/h (96mph) have caused approximately 90,000 homes experiencing outages and forced agencies to halt over 100 flights, as reported by local media.

The gales are affecting the entire southern region and lower areas of the North Island, according to the national weather agency.

Officials in New Zealand have issued rare red wind warnings - the top caution category - in central regions including these major districts.

People have been encouraged to stay indoors, stay off roads, and make arrangements for further power and communication outages.

Extensive Destruction and Crisis Measures

The electricity loss seems to be impacting homes predominantly in the South Island, though officials state that power was being slowly brought back.

Domestic outlets have stated that in some places roofs have been ripped off houses, whereas utility poles and vegetation have been brought down by the winds.

In Wellington, a man was lost his life after being hit by a tree branch at a frequent walking route on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a female was pushed toward moving cars on a street by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was captured in a popular vehicle recording.

Aircraft services to and from the city have been cancelled due to the weather, and various routes and public facilities are also closed.

At the same time Canterbury officials have issued a crisis declaration, to assist recovery activities.

Strike Action Amid Severe Weather

The wild winds on today occur while tens of thousands of school staff, physicians and civil servants are participating in what has been described as a "significant labor action", demanding improved salaries and workplace environments.

But the intense climate has pressured them to change certain arrangements, with several external protests moved indoors or called off.

Similar gusts are affecting Australia, ushering in a high-temperature event to the remote areas.

Authorities have announced flame prohibitions for apprehension regarding forest fires.
