European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
